Grave Sites of Our Ancestors
by Carol Black Davis
It had been thought until recently that a child of William and Adilla Black, named Matilda, was the fourth born following John V. (V for Van Sickle), James M. and Mary Ann. Her tombstone was recently located in Potter cemetery off of Pumphouse Rd. and it shows her death as March 2, 1845 at two years of age. This would mean that she would have been the 6th child instead of the fourth. Elias would have been born after Mary Ann, followed by Emery, Matilda, Garrett and lastly Eliza. Adilla’s tombstone was also located in Potter’s cemetery next to her daughter’s. She died at the age of thirty-five in 1849.
William Black’s grave was located several years ago in the Maplewood Evangelical Cemetery buried with his youngest son, Eli. Descendents made contributions for his tombstone.
After Adilla’s death, William married again to Catherine Agustian and her great granddaughter, Mary Spagenberg, says that she was always told that Catherine was also buried in Potter Cemetery although her tombstone has not yet been found. William’s children by his 2nd wife were William H., Spencer, Emma Jane, George Clinton, and Eli.
